Sky Lantern Principal
Sky lanterns are a ‘mini hot air balloon’ made of rice paper with a bamboo hoop at the bottom, traditionally a wire cross was used to hold a fuel patch but of course our lanterns have no wire and use a flame resistant string in its place.
The sky lantern fuel cell is lit and hot air fills the paper balloon, after a short while the lantern is ready to let go and fly
Sky Lantern History
Sky lanterns have been in use in the Far East for many hundreds of years; Chinese historians believe that the sky lantern (also known as Khoom Fay Kongming or Khom Loy) was invented around in around 280AD by Chinese military strategist Zhuge Liang, this is almost certainly not true as there is evidence that sky lanterns were experimented with by the Chinese military as early as 300BC .
Sky Lanterns Now
Sky lanterns are becoming popular across the world as an alternative or addition to fireworks; sky lanterns are often released at weddings, birthdays, parties, bbq’s and even funerals.
A group of lanterns released simultaneously is a fantastic sight, so much so that lanterns are routinely mistaken for UFO.s |
